Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt, June 30th

This week's theme is Sweet.
Check out TN Chick for the way to join in.
Look at the blogroll to see more Photohunters.
This is a year ago, around the 4th of July, at my parent's house. My niece was turning one last year, and she was eating her first birthday cake. She was sharing a birthday cake with her Mommy, my sister. Their birthdays are the 3rd and the 5th!
The cake was sweet, and so is she.
This next week on my other blog, Project 363, I am going to do a color theme week. In honor of the country's birthday, I am doing a red, white, and blue week. I post one picture for every day, and I am going to search for patriotic photos during the week. Check back with me and see what I find around my town and my parents' town as I visit them.

Roundup!!

I thought I was going to scrapbook tonight. But now it's already 9:00, and I haven't even gotten started! I am a person who really can't journal after 9 at night. My brain is beginning to shut down already.

Stuff is happening in my life. Stuff!! Some of this stuff is unbloggable. But let me say that things are really changing.

Some of the areas of my life that I thought were so stable, the parts that I went to to be in control and stay sane, these areas of my life are kinda shaky. I have questions that can't even be answered because it's not all about ME.

But here's what I've been thinking about that I can talk about.
  • I am so enjoying summer with the kids. June activities are almost all wrapped up.
  • B is done with all her track camp and all her softball. B will get to go to the Regional meet in July, so some practice will still happen. But gone are the mornings we wake up to be at the track at 8:00!
  • J is at his opening night of Godspell Junior tonight, which is the end product of acting camp. He will have this weekend and next weekend all busy with performances. I got to see the end scene of the show, and it is VERY emotional for the actors---who are from 8 to 18. They're kids playing parts in the story of Jesus, but the emotion in the crucifixion scene was pretty real. I see it for the first time on Sunday afternoon.
  • Swimming is happening, and tanlines are forming. I would love to show you the difference between B's very tan legs and her little white bottom! I won't! But it's amazing to me that she is my child since I do not tan in the slightest. J is busy when the pool is open,so he hasn't gotten his tan yet. He won't tan like B, but he's better off than I.
  • Medical mysteries abound around me. My BIL had a scare in the middle of the night, with pains like a heart attack. He's only in his 30s! They called 911 and had him all checked out, but thankfully, it was not a heart attack! It was a side effect (a rare one!) of a medicine he was taking. Another mystery is tearing up one of my friends. She has tremors and is throwing up, and has pains in her back from an injury. The doctors are not giving her relief with anything that's happened so far. Today was another appt., and her husband was going with her, hopefully to voice some concerns to get something moving in her care.
  • Money is tight. I'm having to train the kids to think differently about stuff like eating out and getting extra "stuff." It's not totally fun.
  • I had a good Creative Memories Day! I had two sales today, and they were more than $200 together!
  • Crafts are really keeping us busy around here when there is down time. We bought some Perler beads and J is making all kinds of animal shapes in the colors of super heroes. B is making all kinds of cute things. We're still knitting and drawing and making things of clay!

I have a lot of other stuff, but now it's after ten. Part of this hour I spent watching a play of the Littlest Pet Shop toys---B had them do a play for me. It was a hit with the whole audience!

How many pieces of jewelry do you wear most days?
This summer--its been one! My wedding ring.
I usually only wear three if I am wearing any at all. Two earrings and the wedding ring. (My engagement ring still needs some repairing before i wear it again.

Soup
What is your favorite instrumental song?
I didn't even have to think about it.
But I also love George Gershwin's American in Paris and Rhapsody in Blue. And I also cannot forget Vince Guaraldi's "Peanuts" music. I love the Christmassy Skating, and the Linus and Lucy music.

Salad
Who has a last name that you like?
I don't even know!

Main Course
Name a popular movie you’ve never seen.
Oh! I for a while prided myself in the fact I never saw Dirty Dancing. It came out when I was in high school, and even then, I thought just for the name, it wasn't something that sounded like what i stood for. Now I know it probably wasn't that bad, but this was in the period when girls were really starting to dance provocatively with their guys at school dances.

Dessert
Fill in the blank: Nothing makes me ___________ like ____________.
Nothing makes me smile like little kids making up their own stories.

My Fabulous Prize

I have been slow in getting my thank you up to Jane at My Many Colored Crayons , who had a drawing on her blog. I won! She was giving away this purse she made from a vintage tablecloth. I am thrilled to win it, and to have a really personal connection to the fine young woman who made this purse. She is someone who I think is exactly my age, and she works in a public school in L.A. I enjoy her blog and seeing her insights about teaching in an inner-city school. She's crafty! :-)

Best Shot Monday----Sisters

The only bad thing about Best Shot Monday is, I usualy share my best shots of the week on my other blog! I actually am most fond of this picture, of one of my daughter's friends and her two month old baby sister, at the track meet Thursday. So this is truly my best shot.

But . . . I am fond of these also! These are more of my artsy shots---taken for the sake of form, and not to document my own family's life. Does that make sense? Art!

I took this first one at track practice. I was trying to take a picture of the sun. Maybe I'm the only one fascinated by clouds, though.

This next one is also at the track. It's the lines I like about this. I had been walking around this track for two weeks before I took the camera up there and took this picture I had been planning.

The last one should be entitled "Effort". I think of all the shots at the meet this week, this one really shows the effort these kids are putting forth in their running.

Meme---Page 12

There you go, Sirius, Harry thought dully. Nothing rash. Kept my nose clean. Exactly the opposite of what you'd have done . . ."

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J.K.Rowling.

Here's my submission for the meme I found on Exceedingly Mundane. Here are the rules. If you have a blog, and you're reading this---I want you to take a minute and play along! Or leave a comment if you're blogless.

You need to:
1. Pick up a book that is near to you
2. Go to page twelve in the book
3. Read the first two sentences and post it on your blog
4. Also post the book title and the name of the author
5. Tag 3 other people

I say modify #3 to your liking---both Ex. Mundane and I both did more then 2
sentences!

I have not been writing on my blog. What?! Yes, I haven't been actually writing much. I want to do it more, so I will. But if you know me and can see what time I'm posting this, you know I'm up past my own prime time. So another time. :-)

Today's theme is Shiny.
Check out the Hunt. See other Hunters' pages.

I did a lot of searching for something shiny. No picture just leapt to mind when I was faced with the theme. But here it is---a nice, shiny tuba. This is my Dad's instrument, and he is here coaching my nephew, his grandson, to blow play the tuba.

Next week's theme is Sweet. Yum!

Name a funny habit you have.
As I get out of the car, I check and then check again that my keys are in my purse. I locked J in the car when he was about 18 months old, and I try really hard not to do it anymore! Of course, the kids can get themselves out of the car now, but the habit remains. Now I still do it because if I did lock my keys in the car, I'd either have to call up Larry and beg him to leave work to get me, or I'd have to pay someone to help me out.

This isn't exactly a habit, but my husband suggested I reveal that I mix up Christmas Eve and New Years Eve consistently. I *think* the right thing, but I say the opposite! I can be very confusing in December!

Soup
If you could instantly know how to play a musical instrument, which one would you pick?
I'd have to pick guitar! It would be fun to play classical sounds, but I'd like to be a rocker on an electric guitar, too.

Salad
How long is your hair?
It's shoulder length. You can see a picture of me from Wednesday over at my other blog--- Project 363!

Main Course
When was the last time you forgave someone, and who was it?
I am forgiving B for something every day. She has some mean words for me sometimes, but it isn't very long before she asks for forgiveness. Probably we had a conversation like this the day before yesterday.

Dessert
What is your favorite kitchen appliance?
My Kitchen Aid Stand mixer comes to mind, but I love it most for it's looks. ;-) For everyday use, I do love my microwave!

Thursday Theme----Glee

This is my submission for Thursday's Theme---Glee. Thursday Theme is hosted by Tracey at Picture This at Club Mom. Check out her photo and see links to other gleeful pics in her comment section.

This is at my workplace, and the teacher involved is my co-worker Connie. This event, as messy as it is, was one of the most gleeful moments we had last year in all its preschool glory. We were having Pajama Day (one of my favorite days anyway), and for only the second year, we have combined this with Snow Day. Just know that we don't get snow here in out part of Texas, so this is as good as it gets! ;-) We have loads of packing peanuts and the kids are able to jump in them, make little snow angels, throw it around, bury themselves in it, and generally have a free for all they couldn't do at their home.

I think in this picture they were burying Ms. Connie, and as you can see, both teacher and kids were gleeful!

Best Shot Monday----Girls

This was my favorite shot of the week. What I like about it is that although they were back lit, I used a flash to make their faces show up better. And knowing these girls, I can see these are genuine smiles---not forced looking! They will only be eight once, and this captures their little 8-year-old faces really well.

My daughter is in the middle, and these girls are from her softball team. They were at the Closing Ceremonies for the season, but are on the All-Star team, so they will play until they are eliminated this week. This is the first year they've done the all-stars for her age group, and it's a very last minute tournament. They are proud to be wearing their new all-star hats, and they'll get their t-shirts tonight.

Thursday's Theme---Imagine

Can you Imagine . . .

* why this little girl is playing dead?

* what this boy is saying to her---or his buddies

* why someone would need a map of India?

Can you Imagine . . .

*why her friend died, too?

*why she is wearing a nightgown? or what the nightgown might be instead of a nightgown?

* why another little boy had to get in on the action here?

Can you Imagine . . .

* why this little girl brought these tools and toys to the scene?

* what they are going to do?

* that this stroller was used for baby dolls and shopping and as a doctor's car?

These images from my preschool classroom last year are precious to me. The kids are full of imagination. They use what they have to make their story go the way they want. They use objects creatively. They join in the fun and sometimes get excluded by others. They imagine scenarios that I never would have thought of. They use the imaginations of others---their friends and things they see in TV shows and movies---to jump start their own imagining.

In some ways, this is the last big year for imagination. Even in kindergarten, their little lives get structured, and all their time is taken up with thinking about what we tell them to think about. This is the last great hope for us all---imaginations to think of new ways to solve old problems, to think about the world with new eyes.

Every year I get a fresh batch of new eyes to share my workdays with. They're full of potential, they're still hopeful (most of them!), they're excited about new things, they are joyful! I am blessed. Imagine!

My Oops---Best Shot Tuesday!

I forgot completely to post a picture yesterday for Best Shot Monday! So here's one of the ones I liked this week.
Feet are such an education in genetics!
My feet are definitely like my dad's and my grandmother's. But they are evolved, taking on traits of my mom's feet, too. So here are my daughter's feet, one more generation removed, carring those traits of Larry's feet, too.
The more you look at feet, the weirder they look, huh?

The Interview

I saw this interview on Heart of Rachel, and asked her to interview me. If you want to be interviewed, let me know in the comments, and I'll send you some questions to put on your blog.

1. Are you a wise or impulsive shopper?
I like to think I am a wise shopper---I make grocery lists and menu plan, I watch for sales and I don't go shop when I don't have any money! But I have been known to buy something on impulse.

2. Name something (could be an event, situation, thing or person) that gives you a natural high.
I really love to open up a new scrapbook or a new notebook or journal. It's a small little high in my life! :-) Going down the water slide at the pool also gives me a little high.

3. Fill in the blank : Life is a series of ______________________.
The first thing that came to mind was Life is a series of Unfortunate Events. Like the book series J is fond of reading. or the Jim Carey movie you might have seen?
But
That is not really my philosophy of life! How about . . .
Life is a series of moments God is drawing you into.

4. What is your idea of pampering?
Someone else making my bed, someone else cooking my meals, someone else driving my car for me (thanks, Larry!), and a nice massage. But this isn't happening to me in the near future, I am afraid! I feel pampered anytime I am relieved of duty, so to speak!

5. Share a random act of kindness you recently received from someone.
It wasn't random, but my friends rallied around me when we were going through our flood. The biggest blessing was the housing we were offered when we had to leave our house. My friend T had a duplex she rents out, and one side was empty. She let us stay in it about a week. It wasn't furnished, so we sort of camped in there with air mattresses and camping chairs. She told me it was so not a big deal for her, but for me, it was a blessing that I couldn't have done without. Not to mention, my friend L let us stay at her house one night at the drop of the hat----so last minute, and she let us come in there and disrupt her family. Just a huge thing to us. I now want to be able to do that for someone else!

Interview rules:
1. Leave me a comment saying “Interview me.”
2. I will respond by emailing you five questions. I get to pick the questions.
3. You will update your blog with the answers to the questions
.4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

Okay? Who's game?

Sports Video

B's hit June 4th

Here is a video of B making a hit at a recent game. It's only 19 seconds long! I couldn't figure out how to get the videos to my blog until it dawned on me---I can upload videos to Webshots and get a link to it there. Webshots is free and my family uses it all the time.

Hmmm. . . when I click on the webshots window, I don't get the video! But I do when I click on the little title up there---B's hit June 4th. Have a look---it will take you to another page of all my pictures in that album.

More Shoes

After visiting some other Photo Hunters, I remembered these other two pictures of shoes.

This first picture is my son and my niece. This was back at Thanksgiving. She was a fanatic for shoes, and tried on every person's shoes in the house.

This second picture was June 2005, when we visited Holland, Michigan, for my cousin's wedding. (Happy two year anniversary, Dan and Krista!) We had to go visit the real Dutch windmill and the gift shop. We ended up getting a little Dutch hat for B instead.

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt, June 9th

Join in the Photo Hunt by visiting TNChick. Look at others' choices for the Hunt!

This week's hunt theme is Shoes.

I just had to get new shoes for both the kids. Yes, school just got out, and I'm buying shoes! J needed black closed-toe shoes for his performance this week, and we got these dress shoes. B needed new tennis shoes for running in track camp. She had been wearing the same shoes all school year, and when we got these new ones, they were two sizes bigger!

Can you see the sizes in the shoes? J---a man's size 9!!! Yikes! B---a girl's size 4.

This picture is really more about the nails than the shoes. I've been wanting to post pictures of my toenails. B and I have painted them in honor of her softball team---lime green and black! I wanted to go with less black than her, so I did little flowers on my big toes. She did little Fs (for Firecrackers) on her big toes. But we have matching shoes---she is big enough now to get the smallest woman's size in these flip-flops.

I am putting some new pictures on my Project 363 blog. Please have a look at those.

Next week's theme is Hair. I hope you'll come back! I love to read your comments. Thanks!

On a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10 as highest), about how popular is your last name?
10, and for people my age, my "Jennifer" is very common, too!
(added later!) I just saw a website where names are ranked---and in the U.S., my married last name was #36 in the U.S. Here's the site: name-stats.com Should I go down to a 9?
You should take note that there are many Hispanic surnames on this list. Jamie's graduation program had many Hispanic kids in the group, and it was interesting to see that where the group split in half, it was just about between letters G and H. I don't think that would be the case if it was a mostly white group of kids.
http://www.namestatistics.com Here is another site o found on someone else's site. My maiden name is #2334 in the U.S. with about 12,500 people with my maiden name.
That kind of stuff is always interesting to me----I spend a lot more time than I ought to looking that stuff up!
Salad
Who is your all-time favorite sitcom character, and why?
I have to go back and think of sitcoms that have been my favorites---The Cosby Show, The Facts of Life, Growing Pains, Family Ties, Seinfeld and Friends. That was the era of the sitcom. I'm now more into CSI and Survivor! I don't watch much sitcom except my kids' stuff---my favorites of theirs are Ned's Declassified School Survival Guide , Drake and Josh, and Hannah Montana.
I'll have to go with a teenage celebrity crush and say Alex P. Keaton on Family Ties for my favorite character!

Thursday Theme---Spin

This is the picture I staged for the Thursday Theme, hosted by Tracey C. on Picture This. I wondered if I could snap a better one through this week, but never did. I went with the more obvious meaning of spin. Of course I am thinking of this when I have a daughter who still loves to spin around like this. She'll probably break her Daddy's back. Look---she even has to keep her legs bent up so she can keep herself off the ground. ;-)

The two of them are off at Track Practice this morning. He's off, so he wanted to take her. But I am missing my walking time! I oughta get off this computer and walk the neighborhood a bit!

Summer Schedule

We're adjusting to a new schedule----B has started Track Camp, and her age group meets at 8:00 a.m. I am not complaining (I'm a morning person anyway), since the temperatures are the coolest at this time of day. But we had gotten in the habit of staying up late and getting up late (for us). So this week we have to get ourselves up and moving! And all three of us are moving. I have been walking laps while B has practice. And J has been walking with me. He took his stopwatch on Tuesday and timed himself on a mile. He tried to beat it today and was just a few seconds slower. We have to sort of walk around the groups out on the track, though---the high school guys are there doing stuff and our group of kids was using the other side of the track. But this is my son who I had to force to walk last year. I made him do one lap to start! Now he's walking more than a mile on his own. It's something we both needed.

Also this week is J's Troupe Camp. He has been going in at 12:30 to do classes all afternoon and practices for his performance on Thursday night. He did dance on Monday---a hip-hop class and another one where he learned salsa. "I'm pretty good at salsa!" he told me! ;-) On Tuesday he did classes on acting. I think he was paying attention---he had lots to share with us. Today it was only one session on acting for the camera. This week so far has been just our group from here in our town. But tomorrow, the other kids from around the state will come. The conference will begin! I am hoping J can meet other kids and see a bigger picture of what he can do with acting. He has a small solo in the show tomorrow night! I'm excited to see him perform. He will be reporting to camp in the morning for three days, and up late all the nights with the social stuff of TNT Youth Conference.

B and I went swimming this afternoon. I got the pool punch pass. It's $25 for 25 entries into any pool in our town. Yea! We were at the pool with a family we know, adn then another family showed up, so that was fun. At the time I was about ready to leave, another friend showed up, and we just couldn't leave without playing longer. I have a couple of funny burned spots---B was spraying the sunscreen on me! I am really tired. And B is too. She has had her softball games and practices in the evenings on top of all this other stuff! Whew!

But I'm loving it. I don't think I've ever been more excited to have summer here. (I mean as a mother!) I've made a master calendar on the computer with all the library events (my kids are almost too old for all this stuff!) and the movies we can go see for a dollar. I realized as we were sitting in a $1 movie yesterday after track, that we were actually watching a DVD! No previews, ads or anything before the film, just a screen that said, "DVD/VCR" I was laughing at myself for going to the movies to see a DVD I could rent myself. ;-) But it was on a giant screen.

Happy Summer!

We Oughta Be in Pictures . . .

It's summertime, and I'm playing along with Tracey C. at Picture This. She has been doing her "Best Shot Mondays" for a while, and I haven't played along. I am going to give you a shot---my favorite of the week---every Monday. This week it's a little sad, but I like it.

This was after a losing game, and I think her emotion is written all over her face. Or maybe my Mommy radar is detecting it because I know her well! Look at those eyebrows!

Also, Tracey is hosting a theme picture day, and this week it's "spin." Thursdays I'll try to post a picture in her Thursday Theme. This is along with what I am already doing----Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt, hosted by TNChick. AND you know, I have a photo blog, one picture a day, at Project 363. It's really a slice of my life. I'm already almost halfway through the year!

Saturday Photo Scavenger Hunt, June 2nd

Join the Photo Hunters!

Today's Theme is Art.

This is a subject very near and dear to my heart. I took art classes for kids through Memphis State University (I think?) when I was in 3rd grade (I think again?). I took private oil painting lessons from a lady at our church when we moved to Texas. I took a year of Art in Junior high and then 3 years in high school. (I also took band so I ended up with 7 credits "Fine Arts" and I only needed 1 to graduate!) I've done pencil sketches, pastel drawings, charcoal, calligraphy, worked with clay and fired my work in a kiln, weavings, drawn with Prisma Pencils (one of my favorite mediums), pen and ink, not to mention crayons, glue, papers, ballpoint pens and markers. I love playing with this kind of thing! I even encourage art activities in my pre-school classroom. I just don't have a lot of pictures of me doing this!
This is a picture of me and my Art Club, circa 1987. I am the one in the red shirt in the middle. I had to scan in an album page I made! (Click on it to see a larger image.)

This is my daughter in the district Art Show this spring. She had two pieces of art in the show, a storyteller doll (colorful to our left) and a wax resist (the one with the yellow mat that looks like a sunburst).

J also had a piece in the Art show this spring---a bowl he had made. I love the colors he chose.

This was one interesting shot I took at the show of other students' art. Tiny Day of the Dead Masks (a Hispanic /Mexican tradition). Dia de la Muertos!
So Art is even important to my children. I have shared what I have learned about perspective and shading and colors, just in a natural way through the years, and I think they are very good at producing what they want to on paper or in clay or any medium they choose. It's creativity!
Next week's photo hunters theme is Shoes. Come back and see what I find!
