Creative Weekend
two bags of feathers: $4
black beads that looked like rocks: $3
otter-like fabric: $2.50
old pair of shorts: $0 (we'd used up their value already, I thought!)
Karana costume she made herself: priceless
B had a project due on Tuesday about the book she read this summer---Island of the Blue Dolphins. It's a story about a girl of 12 who gets left on an island. I think it takes place in the 1800s. She lived alone for another 12 or so years. The book is all about how she survived. It was written in the 1960s. I'm sure many of you have read it!
B chose the project to make a costume like Karana would have worn. Of course, no other project sounded as interesting to B, so we had to go with it!
B had a vision for the costume and we worked together to get it done. We were both pleased with this project's results.
Karana had an otter-skin cape, a cormorant-feather skirt, flowers in her hair, a black stone necklace, and her dog-friend, Rontu.

Have never read the book but WOW the joy of creating something you have in your mind at that age. Priceless indeed Jen!!!
So often I see lately kids who have no creativity. Everything is easily purchased at Target.....preserve the homemade I say!!!!!

Hi. It is me again. Could you post the recipe for the cookie cake you made for your daughters party? I was thinking that would be perfect for a Halloween party I might be doing. If it is too much trouble- don't worry about it. Thanks!

I read that book years ago, it was fascinating. Did you know it is based on a true story?
Beautiful costume, she did a great job on it. It´s good to see that creativity is alive and well in the younger generation! :D
